Copying great guitarists is extremely useful to a certain point although there comes a time when you naturally want to express your own voice through the instrument. This is an important stage where you decide what tone feels right and how you want to hit the notes. This is the beauty of the electric guitar as it hears every nuance we put into it. We often take elements from many players to create our own sound. Learning from masters of other instruments is also really key!
Carlos Santana sometimes takes words in English or Spanish and puts them into musical sounds copying the rhythmic quality of the words. This is one way of ¨making it talk¨.
Have fun !
